We reached out to Greenhouse Management magazine readers to explore how they use lighting for their particular crops and how they feel about the lighting landscape in general. What we discovered is that the vast majority of those who responded are using supplemental lighting for some portion of the crops they grow under cover. And the large majority of those supplemental light users are doing so with LEDs, particularly in the controlled environment agriculture sector.
But there are a few struggles. Concerns remain with the cost of LEDs, and despite there being rebates, many have submitted but have not received them. Still, sentiment around LEDs remains positive, with some growers looking for a better understanding of how the technology will fit in with their crops. Meanwhile, HID and fluorescent are still common in the lighting mix, even as growers look to upgrade in the next three years.
