The icy blue foliage of Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii SAHARA ‘Glacier Blue’ contrasts nicely with the delicate, creamy white margins. The flower bracts produced in spring echo the foliage coloration, giving additional seasonal interest.

It makes a graceful textural element in containers, borders and rockeries. It has good vigor and a stronger habit than other variegated Euphorbia.

In the landscape

Prune flowering stem hard back to the base after flowering to encourage strong new shoots. Avoid contact with the milky sap, which is a skin irritant.
It’s drought tolerant once established but needs watering during prolonged dry periods.
‘Glacier Blue’ features a compact, rounded habit and grows 12-18 inches tall and spreads up to 18 inches. It’s best suited for full sun or partial sun locations. It’s hardy in USDA Zones 7-11.
Bloom time is early summer through fall. Use in containers, as a border plant or en masse.

Culture notes

Propagation is from softwood cuttings, and a license is required.
Crop timing from rooted liners for a 1 quart is 6-8 weeks or 10-12 weeks for a 1 gallon.
Use a well-draining media. Monitor for mites during hot weather; they are easily overlooked on heavily variegated plants. Take extra care to avoid root diseases by keeping the crown above the soil level at planting and avoid over-watering. Keep the fertility levels low.
