HGTV Home adds horticulture expert

Dr. Allan Armitage to be a member of the cable channel's plant selection committee.

HGTV Home announced the addition of horticulture expert Dr. Allan Armitage to its Plant Collection. Armitage will be a member of its plant selection committee. HGTV worked in conjunction with Agricola Management Group to develop its various Plant Collections.

Armitage served as Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the University of Georgia for more than 30 years. He will be responsible for overseeing the genetics evaluation processes for both annuals and perennials under consideration for the Plant Collection, taking into account performance evaluations from growers and consumer gardeners alike.

Armitage is author of 13 books, including Herbaceous Perennial Plants, the “bible” of perennial references, Armitage’s Garden Annuals, Armitage’s Garden Perennials and Armitage’s Native Plants. He recently developed his own App for smartphones and tablets for gardeners and retailers, “Armitage’s Greatest Perennials and Annuals.” As for his research accomplishments, developed and maintained the Trial Gardens at University of Georgia, and introduced popular new plants such as ‘Margarita’ sweet potato, Verbena ‘Homestead Purple, and many others.

The HGTV HomeE Plant Collection has been available in more than 950 retailers in the U.S. and Canada this year in 2013. Further expansion of growers, retailers, and plant varieties is anticipated.
