Bowery named to CNBC's Disruptor 50 list

Bowery is the lone greenhouse or vertical farming company on the list.

Bowery, the New York-based vertical farming company, has been named to CNBC's Disruptor 50 list. They are the only greenhouse or vertical farming company on the list.

The list "highlights private companies that are chasing some of the market’s biggest opportunities, and growing despite a tough capital markets environment and slowing economy." The full list, which includes companies such as Canva, OpenAI and Chime, can be found here. A specific write-up on Bowery can be found here.

Founded in 2015 by Irving Fain, David Golden and Brian Falther, CNBC says Bowery has a valuation of $2.3 billion with key technologies of AI, machine learning and robotics. Bowery has raised $647 million to date, including a $150 million credit investment in 2022 and a $325 million Series C funding round in 2021.

Fain is the company's CEO today. Last year, the company also expanded outside of New York City to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with a new farm build. They also announced a partnership with plant breeder Unfold in 2022 to trial new varieties for vertical farms.

"If we've learned anything from the past two years it is that we are in a period of unprecedented disruption and uncertainty across our climate and geopolitical circumstances, which unfortunately is going to persist. We are also seeing firsthand that our global food system is inextricably tied to these dynamics," Fain said in a release announcing the Bethlehem farm. "At Bowery, wherever food is needed, we can grow it. We are addressing the challenges in our system by growing food smarter for more people in more places - and that work, securing food for our future, continues today with the opening of our Bethlehem Farm."
