The Cornell Chronicle recently profiled alumnus Michelle Cilia, one of the researchers responsible for finding a solution to citrus greening.
Cilia is working with researchers from the University of Washington and University of California, Davis, to develop biomarkers and measure other factors to find early citrus greening (HLB, Huanglongbing) infection markers, well before visual symptoms appear. She told the Chronicle that she expects results within the year.
A recently released USDA and NASS report forecast a decline in the Florida citrus industry with all-orange, non-Valencia orange, grapefruit, and tangerine production seeing decreases. The USDA led initiative to combat citrus greening is being led by Mary Palm, who described the disease as "devastating" for the Florida citrus industry.
