Jiffy Products has announced the launch of Jiffy Gel, a new gel-based substrate designed to deliver superior performance, minimize pathogen risk, improve sustainability and offer on-site production.
Made from bio-based materials and essential plant macro- and micronutrients, Jiffy Gel was specifically developed with controlled environment agriculture in mind. It is also suitable for a broad variety of crops, making it a versatile solution for growers across diverse production systems.
The product is tailored for high-performance and addresses the needs of modern agriculture, such as enhanced water efficiency, stronger root development and crop uniformity in plant propagation. It is a pathogen-free, automation friendly substrate ideal for crops like leafy greens, herbs, microgreens, soft fruits and tissue culture.
It can also be customized for different tray types and has a flexible production model. Growers can choose between having material delivered ready-to-use or collaborating with Jiffy to produce it at the farm, helping to streamline logistics, reduce transportation needs and lower the potential for contamination, ultimately simplifying the overall supply chain.
Additionally, the material’s environmentally friendly properties support more sustainable practices by reducing waste and contributing to circular production systems.
“The future at Jiffy is based on sustainability and our sustainability pledge, and for us, it’s about ensuring that we live today in a way that allows both our business and our planet to thrive for tomorrow,” said Brian Schulker, Jiffy business development manager of growing media components. “Being composed of bio-based materials allows this product to be friendly to the planet and biodegrade in a way that doesn’t actually impact the planet once the final product has been grown.”
“The CEA industry wants a food-safe substrate that delivers exceptional performance, is fully biodegradable, works well with automated systems and is sustainable,” said Kyle Freedman, Jiffy’s global segment manager for CEA. “Systems have often been designed around available substrate materials that have long dominated our industry. It is now time where we develop substrate materials specifically for the ways in which we are producing plants.”
