The situation could get worse as Arctic temps approach.

Richmond, Va. — The winter weather badly damaged one of Richmond’s only urban farms and with an arctic blast on the way, the situation could get worse.

A new greenhouse at Tricycle Gardens in Manchester got some unwelcome green inside as a tree came smashing through the roof during the weekend’s wind storm. Then snow piled on ruining all the food growing inside.

“It’s critical for us to have the greenhouse is in full operation. Right now we’ve had to halt everything,” said Sally Schwitters, the owner. Schwitters says she just put the greenhouse up over the summer due to increased demand. The urban farm helps bring fresh food into parts of the city that don’t get it normally.  “We have our corner stores and farmer’s markets. Our customers rely on this food,” Schwitters said.
