Fruit fungus threatens bananas

A banana fungus, known commonly as Panama disease, has infected crops in Australia and parts of Asia.

The fruit fungus now commonly known as Panama disease has been working its way across the globe, infecting the world's banana markets.

The so-called disease has already crept into Africa, Australia, and large swaths of Asia. The world's largest banana grower, Chiquita, has already started researching resistant strands of bananas to try and counter Panama disease, according to Popular Science.

The disease is believed to be transported via infected soil.
