Fruit linked to healthy pregnancies

Research shows three servings of fruit daily decreases risk of complications.

A healthy diet that includes at least three pieces a day—both before and during pregnancy—may increase the chance of an uncomplicated pregnancy, according to a new study published in the research journal, http://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f6398 BMJ.

Researchers monitored more than 5,000 first-time mothers in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland to investigate factors leading to a normal pregnancy rather than factors that could have an adverse effect.
A comprehensive set of data—including details about medical histories and dietary information—was collected by interviewing and examining participants, and conducting questionnaires. Participants underwent an ultrasound scan between 19 and 21 weeks and had maternal measurements monitored. The outcome of pregnancies and infant measurements were collected after birth by research midwives.
