President announces immigration action delay

President Obama has announced that he will not pursue executive action on immigration until after the November elections. The decision largely reflects concern that acting now will lead to a voter backlash that may further challenge Democrats in their effort to retain control of the Senate. Many of the seats Democrats are defending this election cycle are in fairly conservative states like Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, and North Carolina. There is only one highly competitive race in which proactive steps on immigration are expected to help the incumbent, Mark Udall (D) of Colorado. He is facing a spirited challenge from current Republican Rep. Cory Gardner.

The President's decision to delay was met with immediate and fierce opposition from immigration advocates who have been calling for broad action to end deportations of undocumented immigrants who have not committed serious crimes. Republicans criticized the political motivations for the President's announcement, though to be fair, they had harshly condemned Obama for considering executive actions at all.
