Know your vegans

There are vegans and then there are raw vegans and more. Read on.

One term that the media keep using to describe some vegans and that produce growers need to be aware of, is raw vegans. Vegans, of course, eat plant-based diets consisting of both raw and cooked foods. Raw vegans eliminate the cooked foods, but that’s not the only difference. In fact, there are three main types of raw vegans:

Fruitarians only eat fruits, vegetable, seeds, and nuts. They do not eat anything involving harming the plants during harvest. This is why they eat many fruits. Some experts claim this way of eating could be harmful for children and or teens. However, John Hopkins Hospital noted that our ancestors’ diet was mainly fruit, and they survived and thrived.

Juicearians juice fruits and vegetables for days, weeks, or even months to lose weight or to gain health benefits. During these periods they will only drink their foods. No other food is consumed, other than water. This became very popular after the documentary titled http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/ “Sick, Fat and nearly dead.”

“Traditional” raw vegans only consume plant-based foods, including those that result in damage to the plant during harvesting. Their diet includes uncooked (not heated above 115 degrees Farenheit) fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, and oils.

The vegan culture is an important consumer segment with which commercial produce growers should be familiar.
