After a cold and brutal Cleveland winter, I am ready for springtime! Spring not only brings April showers and May flowers, but a renewed energy for life and organization. So why not put that motivation to good use by dusting the cobwebs off of your social media profiles? Here are 7 simple things you can do this spring to refresh your social media profiles and get them looking all bright, shiny and new.
- Spruce Up That Profile
- Update your profile picture. Got a new haircut? Show it off!
- Update your bios and “about” pages to reflect your current persona. Make sure they contain pertinent keywords so people can find you!
- Update your contact info. Did you get a new job? Move to a new city? Change email addresses?
- Update and revise your blogroll. Add any great new sites you now follow and omit those that are irrelevant or inactive.
Do a content audit of your site and blog to make sure no posts need to be updated or archived. - How long has it been since you’ve revisited your blog or website’s categorization and tagging? Make sure that your categories and tags are clear and easy to navigate for users. Having too many or some indirect categories can confuse users. Condense and clarify!
- The Great Unfollow
- Say Goodbye for Good
How long has it been since you’ve taken a gander at that 140 character Twitter bio? Does it still embody your hipster phase, single life or college days? Have things changed?
Now is the time to sit down and go through all of your social media profiles, blogs and/or web pages and give those digital entities a good scrub. Here’s where to start:
You can’t be friends with everyone. Go through your friend and follower lists and cut out the excess. I think of this as “trimming the muffin top.” Be selective and make sure the people on your list add value and make you laugh—not clog your feeds.
You tried, but it just didn’t work out. Some platforms just can’t steal your heart the way Twitter, Vine and Facebook did. Just like exes, it can be hard to walk away. But if you signed up for any new social media platforms this past year and it’s just not clicking, say goodbye for good. Maybe platforms like Thumb, Chirp, Path and Myspace showed promise, but relationships can’t be one sided. So make sure you delete the account, uninstall the app and remove the bookmark. Then move on. Remember, there are plenty of fish in the digital sea!
