Talk about getting your veggies fresh. Some supermarkets have taken to building greenhouses on their properties, growing their own produce for sale in their stores.
Whole Foods in Brooklyn, N.Y. opened a 20,000 sq. ft. greenhouse that rests upon the grocery store's roof. The greenhouse is the second to be built and operated by Gotham Greens in New York City, with a third slated to start production in early 2014. According to reports, the Whole Foods greenhouse will grow over 200 tons of fresh produce annually.
Whole Foods isn't the first supermarket to try growing its own produce. Rouses Market in New Orleans unveiled its rooftop garden in 2012, and several cities globally have attempted similar feats.
