Building on last fall’s Introduction to Aquaponics Workshop, on June 21 from 1-4 p.m. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Nueces and San Patricio Counties will offer a second aquaponics class, Aquaponics 206: Building the System. Anybody interested in starting their first aquaponics project can attend this workshop and learn about and construct an aquaponics system.
The workshop will be held at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center, 10345 State Hwy 44, Corpus Christi. A participation fee of $30, which includes a chance to win an assembled backyard aquaponics system, will be charged at the door, according to Jason Ott, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent for agriculture and natural resources in Nueces County.
Aquaponics is a closed system method of growing plants in a symbiotic relationship with fish. The fish waste feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water that returns to the fish. This full-day workshop will help participants gain insight into how to design and manage their own backyard aquaponics system, as well as learn about the marketing strategies, business planning and economics of a larger, commercial system.
