Wegmans' produce bags no longer contain fossil fuels

Wegmans, the Rochester-based grocery chain, is on a restricted-plastic diet.

Those produce bags shoppers use to hold apples, tomatoes and lettuce now contain no fossil fuels, the grocer says.

The new, re-sealable wrappers around the rotisserie chicken uses 75 percent less plastic than the old two-piece domes. The cakes come in 100-percent recycled boxes.

And customers are part of the recycling effort, according to Wegmans. Last year, customers brought back about half of the plastic shopping bags that left Wegmans' stores for recycling. That means the shopping bags going back out the front doors are made with 40 percent of those returned bags.
